Move over superhero movies, the hot new thing in American cinemas is apparently concert films. After Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour made nearly $180 million over the last eight weeks, Beyoncé has arrived to do her part in taking over the theater industry. Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé made $21 million in its debut, easily taking the number one spot at the domestic box office this weekend and making nearly $10 million more than The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes despite playing in a thousand fewer theaters.
Third place went to Godzilla Minus One, which made $11 million in its debut, followed by Trolls Band Together ($7.6 million and $74 million after three weeks) and Wish (continuing Disney’s difficult year with $7.4 million and only $41 million after two weeks). The bottom half of the top 10 starts with Napoleon, which dropped pretty hard after its debut last week and made $7.1 million. After that we have Animal, churchy multiverse movie The Shift, and John Woo’s Silent Night (a soft debut with a somewhat limited release at $3 million). Finally, the last spot goes to Thanksgiving, which somehow made $2.6 million in December.
Sadly, the top 10 this week must say goodbye to Marvel’s The Marvels, which will definitely go down as the lowest-grossing MCU movie, as well as The Eras Tour, which very conveniently and respectfully is bowing out of most theaters to give Beyoncé the space she deserves. You don’t see Marvel movies doing that for DC movies, not that Taylor Swift is Marvel and Beyoncé is DC in this scenario… in fact, just to make sure no one yells at us, let’s say neither of them are DC.
